On December 6, hours after scoring two goals in the Riazor stadium in the match against Deportivo La Coruña, Messi travelled to Paris, where he received the award at an elegant ceremony drawing a great many expectant journalists. With a gentle smile on his face, and showing his genuinely affable nature, he made a good impression on everyone, as his kindness isn’t that usual in the world of football.
Argentina’s star is the sixth Barça player who’s received the Ballon d’Or and the winner who beat the second, Cristiano Ronaldo, with the highest margin: Messi got 473 points while Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo got 233. The jurors rewarded FC Barcelona with third and fourth place in the voting: Xavi Hernández and Andrés Iniesta, respectively. This means Guardiola’s players are considered to be among the best players in the world, and confirms Barça are the best team of the year.
This award highlights blaugrana youth’s capabilities. Messi is the first player among those who came through the Barça youth system to win the Ballon d’Or, and Xavi Hernández became the first Catalan player to step on the podium of France Footballer magazine’s award. Besides, Messi, Iniesta and Xavi, alongside Kakà and Cristiano Ronaldo, have been shortlisted for FIFA World Player of the Year. The award, to be presented later this year, would cap a brilliant blaugrana season.
